The Krugerrand is the most recognizable and appreciated bullion coin in the world. It is the first investment coin put into circulation in 1967 by the South African Rand Refinery Mint. This bullion coin is recommended to all investors and collectors. Krugerrand is famous for its specific alloy, for years it has been made of 22 carat gold with an admixture of copper, which makes the Krugerrand more resistant to abrasion and damage, so even the first Krugerrand may look as if they have just left the mint. The addition of copper gives the Krugerrand its unique golden-red color. Sanctions introduced in the 1970s and 1980s resulted in the ban on the import of this bullion coin to other countries. As a result, mints from around the world began to mint their own coins and so were created, among others Golden Canadian Leaf, Britannia or Australian Kangaroo. The lifting of sanctions in 1991 resulted in a renewed interest and desire for Krugerrand. Interesting information about this investment coin is the fact that despite the Krugerrand has no specific monetary value, it is a full-fledged means of payment.

The obverse of the coin features an image of Paul Kruger. Paul Kruger was the first elected president of South Africa in the late 19th century. His bust has appeared on countless earlier South African coins, including South African pound denominations.

South African zloty reverse  The Krugerrand has an image of the Springbok antelope. The Springbok antelope has also appeared on previous South African coins, but is most often associated with the Krugerrand series. An antelope is shown traveling the plains of South Africa.
